Attention Chocoholics! The Master Chef Chocolate Challenge is returning to Pembroke Pines. Bring in your favorite home baked cakes, cookies, pies, brownies, cupcakes and other desserts and you may be leaving with a prize. The event will be held on February 13, from 10am-11:30am, at the Carl Schechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The deadline to enter is February 9. There is no cost.

“Never underestimate the power of chocolate; it is the key to happiness!” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary skills and possibly win a cash prize. Remember to be creative. Judges are not only looking for the best tasting dessert, they are also looking for the dessert that is beautiful to look at!”

All desserts must be home baked and contain one key ingredient … chocolate.  No store bought entries are allowed. A list of ingredients must be provided. Prizes will be awarded for the top three decadently delicious desserts and visually stunning desserts.

Celebrity judges from Vicky Bakery will be judging the event. They will be looking at appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” They must be present to win. Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them.

Last year, Sandra Levine won first place for her Black Forest Cake. Second place was awarded to Natasha Beaubrun for her Dark Choc Mocha Cake. Camile Lewis won 3rd place for her Chocolate Biscotti

Daniels says that they are planning several other Master Chef Baking Challenges throughout the year. In addition to the Chocolate Challenge, previous challenges have included Crazy Cupcakes, Mango Madness, Holiday Cookies and Key Lime Baking Challenge.

Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.
